Data structures are one of the most integral aspects of development. Understanding how to use them is an important step towards becoming a better coder overall. However, this task is hard enough in itself, much less when you need to learn everything you can about them. If this sounds like something that you’re looking for, look no further than “How to Use Data Structures” by William Tremblay and Brian Sorenson, which walks through every major data structure available with details on what they do and why they work the way they do. First off, this book is, of course, written by two professors. This means that it is very daunting at first. While this is a good book for those looking to become professional developers one day, it may be better suited for those who already have some experience with coding under their belt. One complaint leveled at this book is that certain topics come up completely unexpectedly and are not necessarily easy to understand on their own. For example, the back end of chapter 10 talks about how binary trees are modeled on computers. While the methods are great for understanding how they actually work, some feel that they do not properly introduce the topic or even introduce it at all. This book’s biggest strength, however, is also its greatest weakness: it does not teach you how to use data structures. The only way to learn how to use them is through trail and error. While this is a useful tool for learning, it does take some getting used to if you want to get the most out of this material. However, the book does present certain topics in a very clear and easy-to-understand fashion. The chapters which cover algorithms and their uses in relation “the big O notation” are good examples of this: while the concepts may seem daunting at first, once you understand big O notation and everything that goes along with it, understanding dynamics comes pretty easily. Another strength of this book is that it explains a lot of the code in a very easy to understand manner. A lot of books approach code by just showing you how it works and not why. “How to Use Data Structures” does work with a lot of codes that have been worked on before, but it also offers some new material, which is great if you’re just starting out with data structures. In conclusion, “How to Use Data Structures” by Tremblay and Sorenson is a useful book for those looking for fundamental explanations of what data structures are and how they work on the inside. However, those who want to actually apply it to their learning may be better off with another book that helps you learn how they work and how to use them.
